Glens Falls opened the 2008 season with a win over Lake George in the first
game of the Adirondack Shootout Soccer Tournament held at Glens Falls’ Morse
Athletic Complex. Both teams were held scoreless during the first half, with
fairly even play from both teams. Following the half, the Indians came out
strong when Zack Weidner
received a Joe Celeste feed through midfield and
netted for the Indians. The second goal came at the end of a string of
missed shots and errant passes that moved through several players and
finally ricocheted off the foot of Keenan Round in front of the net for the
goal. Glens Falls had strong games from several players including Jamie Bruening and
Peter Sliva. Cameron Jones, who did a great job keeping the
game close, anchored Lake George. |

Glens Falls and Fort Ann
took it to overtime in the second game of the Adirondack Shootout at Glens
Falls’ Morse Athletic Complex. Each team had netted in the first half. Glens
Falls controlled much of the pace of the game and they opened the scoring at
25:00 of the first half when Keenan Round was able to tap in a well
placed cross by Josh Wadleigh. However, with less than a minute left
in the half, Fort Ann was awarded a penalty kick when a Glens Falls player
handled the ball in the box. The Cardinals’ Joe Shevy stepped up to
the penalty spot and just beat the outstretched Glens Falls keeper to tie up
the game. A persistent Fort Ann defense held Glens Falls to a scoreless
second half to send the game into overtime. At the nine-minute mark of the
first overtime, Josh Wadleigh once again found Keenan Round in
front of the net. This time Round headed the cross in to put the game away.
Glens Falls had a complete team effort from every player who played- piling
up 30 shots over the course of the game and controlling much of the pace of
the game. Fort Ann keeper Dexter Durkee played a fantastic game in net for
the Cardinals. |

Glens Falls started off day
the High School Hall of Fame Cup tournament with a loss to Elmira Free
Academy of Section IV. EFA was the first team to strike when Matt Praino
took advantage of sloppy marking off a throw-in. Praino’s forward run past a
sleeping Glens Falls defense was easily slipped by the Glens Falls keeper
for the opener. Glens Falls fought back quickly to tie up the game with a
left wing blast by midfielder Josh Wadleigh who received a pass from
Matt Mason and buried it in the net. The first half ended with the
score tied at one goal apiece. A drenching rain marked the second half and
EFA took advantage of the sloppy conditions and sloppy play by the Indians.
Frankie Manino scored the second half hat trick to put the game away early
for the winners. Two of the goals were unassisted and Praino assisted the
other. |

Glens Falls finished off day two of the High School Hall of Fame tournament
with a win over feisty Chittenango of Section III. Chittenango was the first
team to strike when Phil Anson converted on a sloppy clearance by the
Indians back line. A few minutes later, Anson had to leave the game with a
broken nose after a collision in the goalmouth with the Glens Falls keeper
Ben Spilman. The second half was dominated by Glens Falls and they
were able to post two big goals by senior captain Zack Weidner. The
first goal came off a brilliant forward run by Jamie Bruening through
midfield to find Weidner at the top of the box. The second came from a cross
from Josh Wadleigh that was initially touched by Keenan Round
and eventually placed in the goal by an outstretched Weidner. |

Broadalbin-Perth relied on a gritty second half performance to defeat the
host Glens Falls Indians in a hard fought Foothills Council opening day win.
Glens Falls was the first team to strike midway through the first half.
Keenan Round mishandled Jamie Bruening’s cross in the box and
Zack Weidner took advantage to tap it in for the opening goal. At the
half the Indians held the upper hand with the one goal lead. Both teams came
out hard in the second half. But it was the Patriot’s aggressive attack and
quickness that bested the Indians defense. A weak goal kick and poor
defensive positioning allowed Steve Sullivan to receive a clear pass from
Caleb Gruet that he finished into the upper left corner of the goal. With
just minutes left in the game, Colby Russell’s throw-in was centered by
Sullivan to an on-rushing Gruet, taking the Indians defense by surprise, and
scoring the winning goal. Broadalbin-Perth keeper Jared LaPorte played a
fantastic game in goal for the Patriots; keeping the game close despite
Glens Falls leading the game in shots. The Patriots also had good games from
Jared Retersdorf and the defensive unit led by Dan Lewis and anchored by
Anand Shah. |

The officials
said it best at the end of the game, “That was the story of two halves”.
With a hard rain falling for the entire game, Glens Falls came out hard in
the first half to notch the first goal just minutes into the contest. The
Indians Keenan Round placed a great pass on the foot of strike
partner Josh Wadleigh and Wadleigh buried it home to give the Indians
the early lead. Glens Falls continued to dominate throughout the first half,
but a determined Johnstown squad kept the score at 1-0 to enter the half.
Following the halftime break, Johnstown came out looking to equalize and did
so with a scrappy struggle in front of the net. Glens Falls keeper Ben
Spilman initially mishandled the ball in the crease as several players
tried to clear it, but it was Johnstown’s Nick Cannizzo who finally poked it
into the net. The Sir Bills looked to have the momentum following the goal,
until midway through the second half when Patrick Smotzer sent a
lofting early cross into the box from the right flank that connected with
Keenan Round. Round played the ball just right and skip-headed the ball
just over the reach of the Johnstown keeper Nick Rovazzini. The game seemed
put away, until Johnstown received a corner kick with five minutes left in
regulation. Mario Balzano’s cross came directly in front of the Indians
keeper who hesitated on the grab and was beaten to the ball by Tommy Horning
who pasted it into the net for a deserving tying goal. Following a scoreless
and exciting first overtime period, the Indians came out strong and
determined in the second. The eventual game winner was scored by Sam
Caruso who gathered up a loose ball 25 yards from the goal and blasted
it just under the cross bar to end the contest.

Scotia and Glens Falls played a hard fought stalemate for much of the first
half, with each team having opportunities on net and forcing the keepers to
earn their saves. However, with five minutes remaining in the first half,
Scotia's Nate Crow carried the ball from the right flank past several Glens
Falls defenders and blasted a shot past the Indians keeper. This would prove
to be the game winner as neither team was able to convert in the second
half. Scotia had a strong game from Elliot Gordon who pestered the Glens
Falls backs all afternoon and Scotia's defensive line didn't allow a single
shot on goal during the second half. On the other end, Glens Falls keeper
Ben Spilman made several huge saves to keep the Indians in the game for
the full eighty minutes. |

The Gloversville Dragons
continued their winning ways with a dominating win over Glens Falls in
Foothills action. The Dragons got on the boards early with a goal by Jarred
Antonucci just two minutes into the game. Mike Capano’s throw-in from deep
in the Glens Falls zone went untouched by the Indians defense and Antonucci
had little trouble beating the Indians keeper. Antonucci scored his second
goal of the afternoon when he picked up an errant forward pass that darted
through the Glens Falls a beat the keeper with a breakaway goal. Following
the half the Indians made some adjustments that initially resulted in some
more competitive play at midfield. However, midway through the second half,
the Dragons speedy attack and team play took advantage of several Glens
Falls defensive and midfield mistakes to score three additional goals by
Brandon Cooper, Marco Delilli, and Josh Krajcir (assisted by Maurice
Carpenter). Despite the lopsided score, Glens Falls keeper, Ben Spilman,
had another outstanding game for the Indians. |

The Queensbury Spartans
improved their league record to 4-1-0 with a cross-town rivalry defeat of
Glens Falls. Andrew Sconzo opened the scoring for the Spartans in the 32nd
minute of play when Tanner Kietzman sent a long pass to the opposite corner
and Sconzo beat his defender then finished past the keeper on the near post.
Queensbury put the game away with just two minutes left in the game. Mike
Majewski sent a ball across the goalmouth and past the Glens falls keeper to
a streaking Chris Coughlan on the far post. The Glens Falls defense and
keeper failed to adjust and Coughlan had little trouble hitting the back of
the net. The Queensbury defense of Brandon Neddo, Ryan Cassidy, Chris
Coughlan, and Caleb Johnson played an excellent game and didn’t allow the
Indians to get a single shot in the second half. |

South High and Glens Falls each had a classic battle today at South High
with much of the game played between the eighteen yard lines and both teams
creating opportunities to score. Glens Falls best chance came early in the
first half, when Josh Wadleigh rifled a point blank shot off the post
that was eventually cleared by the South High defense. The second half
continued to be a high paced stalemate with the eventual game winner coming
with 12:43 left in the match. Erik Curley took the ball to the goal line to
beating the Indians defender and drawing out the GF keeper Ben Spilman.
Spilman got in the balls path and it was deflected out in front of the goal
where James Catillaz placed his shot between the two center backs and hit
the back of the net. Shots on goal were virtually equal with SGF having 16
and GF having 15. |

Glens Falls and Hudson Falls competed in local action on a rainy and wet
surface with Glens Falls coming out on top with a 5-0 win. Glens Falls
controlled much of the pace of the game throughout and received a great all
around team effort in the win. The Indians were awarded a penalty kick, just
eight minutes into the game, when Jamie Bruening was shoved down in
the box by a Tigers’ defender. Bruening converted on the PK.
Bruening went on to score the second goal just six minutes later when
his corner kick try was mishandled by the Hudson Falls keeper and fell into
the net. Josh Wadleigh rounded out the first half goals when he
converted a left footed shot at the end of a field long counter attack. The
Tigers best chances came early in the second half as they applied pressure
to the Indians defense but were unable to convert. Glens Falls got back on
the boards on a 25-yard shot from Sam Caruso that blazed by the
Tigers keeper. Wadleigh scored his second of the afternoon as he
finished on a far post cross by Jamie Bruening. The Tigers had strong
games from Nick Miller and Tyler Mullen and Ben Neadle. |

Broadalbin-Perth used a
strong offensive and defensive effort today to defeat Glens Falls 2-0. The
Patriots were able to control the pace of the game off the opening whistle
and used good ball possession to create their first goal. Jared Retersdorf
served the ball to the top of the Indian’s box and Allesandro Macchiarelli
was able to get a touch on it and strike it into the far upper corner of the
net for a 1-0 advantage. In the second half, Glens Falls increased their
pressure on the Patriots back line but was unable to create a strong scoring
threat. B-P put the game away with 5 minutes remaining as Nate Dick and
Macchiarelli passed their way down the left side of the field and served the
ball into the box to Scott Harder. Harder one-timed it past Indian’s goalie
Ben Spilman to make it 2-0. For the game, the Patriots outshot the Indians
15-5 and had the advantage in corners 4-0. B-P keeper Jared LaPorte earned
his 6th shutout of the season. |

Glens Falls and Scotia played another high intensity and hard fought battle
in Foothills competition. The first half saw a commanding Glens Falls
midfield attack during which Glens Falls led Scotia in shots 8-2. An
exciting half of play ended with a penalty kick being awarded to the tartans
following a clumsy tackle in the box. Scotia’s Andrew Sickles stepped up to
take the shot but the Indians keeper Ben Spilman stopped his attempt
with a minute remaining in the half. Both teams entered the second half
intent on getting the go ahead goal. Midway through the half, Glens Falls
ended up conceding the only goal of the match on a strong finish by Nate
Crow who tapped in a short pass from Nick Alescio at the penalty spot. On
the game, Glens Falls finished with the shots advantage 14-7. Scotia led in

In yet another Foothills
challenge, the Glens Falls Indians out shot the visiting Gloversville
Dragons only to lose 2-0. The first half of play was a virtual deadlock with
both teams creating opportunities and having chances on net. However, it was
a poorly cleared Indians ball in the box that ricocheted off a Gloversville
player and fell at the feet of Eric Lucas near the penalty spot. Lucas’
finish beat the Indians keeper, Ben Spilman, on the far post to put
the Dragons ahead going into the half. The halftime stats had the teams tied
with eight shots apiece and five saves for each keeper. In the second half,
Glens Falls came out hard and created more opportunities, only to be denied
time and again by the Dragons keeper Dan Krajcir. The Indians put the game
away midway through the second half when the Dragons Eric Lucas intercepted
a poor flank pass. Lucas fed the ball to Marco Delilli who played a through
ball to Jarred Antonucci at the top of the box. Antonucci took a touch then
chipped it into the far post upper ninety. Glens Falls best opportunity to
get back into the game came when they were awarded an indirect free kick
just inside the box. Sam Caruso rolled the ball to Zack Weidner
whose shot was blasted off the post and Krajcir saved the rebound shot.
Both team’s defensive units had outstanding games. The Indians finished the
match with the advantage in shots 19-10. |

Queensbury recorded its third shutout of the week with a hard fought win
over Glens Falls. Brandon Neddo got the games only goal, (also his first
career goal) with 12:44 remaining in the first half, when he delivered a
ball from about 40 yds out on a restart. The ball was sent across to the far
post and it beat Glens Falls Keeper Ben Spilman who was screened on
the play. Spilman had already made several outstanding saves earlier
in the half to keep the score at 0-0. The Indians came out hard in the
second half and put heavy pressure on the Spartans, keeping the ball on the
Spartans side of the field for much of the second half. The Indians came
close several times, but could not find the back of the net. Neddo and
fellow center back Caleb Johnson had outstanding games for the Spartans and
Zach Weidner and Peter Sliva played outstanding for the
Indians. |

What started out as a stalemate between two local rivals turned into a
shootout in the second half of this Foothills Council match. Following a
scoreless first half that saw some spectacular goalkeeping, the floodgates
opened to create some very exciting soccer. Within an eight minute span, the
two teams went shot for shot to tally up a total of four goals. Glens Falls
got on the board first when Zack Weidner gathered up a ball outside
the left side of the box, dribbled through several South High defenders and
blasted a shot into the back of the net. Three minutes later, the Bulldogs’
James Catillaz performed a similar feat as he too showed the technical
ability to dribble through a crowd to tie up the match. Just a minute and a
half later, the Indian’s Josh Wadleigh got onto the end of a long
service from Alex Garrett that resulted in a foot race with the South
High back. Wadleigh’s shot beat the keeper on the right side to put
the Indian’s ahead with 15:55 remaining. But that wouldn’t be the end of it.
Just three after the Indian’s go-ahead goal the Bulldog’s Shane Lefleur sent
a cross to the top of the box. The Indian’s keeper, Ben Spilman, came
off his line to grab the ball but arrived too late. Once again James
Catillaz made the Indians pay for the mistake and slipped the ball past the
onrushing keeper for the equalizer with twelve minutes left in regulation.
The game winner came just one minute into the first overtime when Josh
Wadleigh sent a cross from the left flank to the far side of the box.
Keenan Round settled the pass and tapped it into the net to beat the
Bulldogs outstanding freshman keeper Chase Brooks. The Bulldogs had a very
strong game from Jack Bouchard and Mark Leeson. Glens Falls’ Joe Celeste
and Peter Sliva had standout games for the Indians. |

Glens Falls opened the scoring midway through the first half on a long ball
from Matt Mason to Matt Connell who received the ball at the
six-yard box and skip headed it into the net. Just beating the Tigers keeper
Ryan Darfler. A few minutes later, the Indians Sam Caruso received a square
pass from Zach Weidner in the middle of the field, took a touch
toward net and blasted a shot just under the cross bar from twenty five
yards out. Hudson Falls was able to get one back on a free kick that was
chipped over the defensive line by Dan Archambault. The shot took the
Indians players by surprise and several Tigers ran on to the ball. The ball
was battered about a few times, but eventually tapped into the net by Elijah
Kassie. The second half saw the Indians control much of the pace and
possession of the game with frequent shot at goal, but with no goals to show
for their efforts thanks to the outstanding play of Darfler between the
pipes. |
